a long green hourOctober 19, 2005, 7-9PMOctober 6, 2005 The Institute of Contemporary Art and Lighting for Urban Rooftop Environments (LURE), present "a long green hour", a spectacular outdoor evening event of flicker-light projections and hallucinatory sounds within the autumnal landscape of the University of Pennsylvania's Morris Arboretum on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at 7PM.
Featuring projects and performances by: For "a long green hour" LURE founder Aaron Igler has gathered this group of primarily Philadelphia artists, performers, and musicians to create original works using the Arboretum's lush color and textures as inspiration. Prepare to rouse your senses with site-referential pieces including a hand-drawn animation by painter Kate Abercrombie (based on plant species found at Morris Arboretum) projected from inside a custom-built bat house. Witness a smoky, gurgling alien landscape in Paul Swenbeck's first video installation. Participate in a performance by Kelly Cobb featuring night-shift "gardners" in specially designed outfits, cultivating mysterious species by the glow of dynamo-powered flashlights as Jeremiah Misfeldt's droning sounds from the peripheral-mind draw you towards a wooded grove surrounding the Orange Balustrade. Relax on the lawn as Meg Baird and Helena Espvall-Santoleri cultivate dreamy harmonies that float up through the heavy boughs of nearby evergreens. This evening event will provide a unique opportunity to experience the extraordinary landscape of Morris Arboretum under the influence of some of Philadelphia's most capable "green thumbs." The event will also include a special screening of Antony Balch's "Ghost at No.9 (Paris)" (1963-1972) starring William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin. This was an amazingly fertile period for both Burroughs and Gysin. This film conveys the consciousness of that period in the visual language of two of the artists who defined it. With their reshufflings of identity, jumping juxtapositions, fragmented narrative and witty insinuations of mind control and detox techniques, the film defies rational apprehension, scattering and thereby reorienting the viewer's mental processes and perceptions. FREE BUS TRANSPORTATION will be provided for Penn students to the Morris Arboretum, 100 Northwestern Avenue, and will leave from ICA beginning at 6PM. To reserve space contact fellow@pobox.upenn.edu. Space is limited. If driving separately or taking public transportation visit www.icaphila.org for detailed directions. "a long green hour" is a Spiegel Fund Event presented in conjunction with Rodney Graham: A Little Thought on view at ICA through December 23, 2005. Lighting for Urban Rooftop Environments (LURE) is an ongoing series of fluid media transformations; star clusters of creative talent and energy expanding across the night sky. A limited-edition DVD catalog of the event will be available December 2005. A raffle will be held at the event with a chance to win a free copy. The Emily and Jerry Spiegel Fund to Support Contemporary Culture and Visual Arts has been created to support an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to education that will enhance collaboration at the University of Pennsylvania among it academic department and cultural institutions.
