Courses
Since 2000, ICA has conducted seminar courses for undergraduate students interested in art history and creative writing. Offered alternating years, these year-long courses are opportunities to meet influential artists, collectors and writers in a variety of contexts. Please visit the University Registrar site for more information and to find out how to enroll. Also, learn more about past courses, seminars and tours.
Contemporary Art and the Art of Curating The only undergraduate class of its kind in the country, this year-long seminar gives students firsthand exposure to the contemporary art world and the complex relationships within it. Through personal interaction with curators, museum directors, gallery owners, and private collectors (many of whom are Penn alumni); students come to understand the challenges behind the curatorial process. A collaboration between ICA and the Department of the History of Art, the course culminates with an exhibition in ICA's Project Space. This class will not be offered during the 2008/2009 semesters.
2007-2008 / English 165: Writing Through Culture and Art
Taught by instructor Kenneth Goldsmith, an innovative New York-based poet, editor and critic, this class seeks to blur the traditional boundaries between fine art and creative writing by engaging students in direct response to the exhibitions at ICA. The end result will be a professional publication, co-sponsored by course collaborators ICA and the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing, showcasing the year's endeavors. A series of public programs are organized in conjunction with the class, which offers many opportunities for students to meet some of the most important thinkers and artists of our time.
