Coffee and Conversation: Materializing Absence – Displacement and Trace in Michelle Lopez’s Ballast & Barricades

About

Enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee and join Francesca Bolfo, Penn History of Art PhD candidate for a conversation inspired by Michelle Lopez: Ballast & Barricades, on view at ICA through May 10, 2020.

The discussion will center around themes of displacement and human trace in Lopez’s towering site-specific installation. Participants will consider how Lopez’s work poetically contemplates the broader socioeconomic processes of urban gentrification and the displacement of local communities. Immersed in the gravity-defying environment of suspended scaffolding and dilapidated construction, participants will reflect on how Lopez harnesses materials and forms to generate a palpable experience of absence and loss without relying on direct representation or figuration.
