Taking inspiration from Frank O’Hara’s celebrated poem “In Memory of My Feelings“(1967), this tour and discussion of the exhibition Trevor Shimizu: Performance Artist will explore how Shimizu visualizes the performance of identity. Realized in both painting and video, Shimizu’s characterizations of his “selves” are conceptually complex yet eminently relatable, typifying a condition that is all too familiar within the social media landscape of our digital age.
Participants will consider how the artist’s work outlines the internal and external forces that prompt the creation of identity as it is performed socially, whether online or IRL and how Shimizu’s work interrogates how we stage the scenes of our selves.
