About

In conjunction with her exhibition Ballast & Barricades, artist Michelle Lopez joins Alex Klein, ICA’s Dorothy & Stephen R. Weber (CHE’60) Curator to discuss Lopez’s newly commissioned installation for ICA, the formal and political significations of borders, and the impact of civil unrest on the artist’s work.

Following the conversation, in partnership with the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, ICA will present a screening of the critically acclaimed 1975 film Manila in the Claws of Light (dir. Lino Brocka, 125 min.) with an introduction by Michelle Lopez. Resonating with many of the themes of Lopez’s exhibition, the film mixes documentary and visceral images of political mobilization and the urban landscape of Manila, offering a perspective on the Philippines that has been formative to many artists and filmmakers.
