Artists Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadelapresent their films, The Mesh and the Circle (2014, HDV, 34min), a collection of visual testimonies on gesture, symbolism and labor,and May a Hundred Bolts of Lightning Open You (2015, 16mm, 14min), which was produced collectively by the artists with 17 collaborators.Following the screening Caló and Queimadela will be joined in conversation byLuís Silva and João Mourão, co-directors of Kunsthalle Lissabon (Lisbon,Portugal).
Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela begancollaborating during their studies at the Fine Arts Academy in Porto, Portugal,where they currently live and work. They have collaborated as an artist duosince 2016 creating video installations, films, objects and site-specificenvironments. Their work is embedded in historical, mythical, metaphorical andintuitive references that help to create poetic reflections on differentlandscapes, situations and ideas. The pair have been the recipient of grantsfrom the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to attend an international artist’sresidency at Gasworks, London and were 2012 awardees of the BES Revelationprize. They were finalists of the 10th edition of Edp New Artists prize andwinners of the Lo Schermo dell’arte Film Festival International Prize, in 2013.Caló and Queimadela have presented their work in several exhibition venuesincluding: The National Gallery, Prague; Rowing Projects, London; Gasworks,London; General Public, Berlin; the Serralves Museum, Porto; and mostrecently Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon.
