Troy Michie attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME (2015) and was a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA (2016). Michie is also a recipient of an Art Matters grant (2016) and an emerging artist grant from the Rema Hort Mann foundation (2015). He received his BFA from the University of Texas El Paso and his MFA from the Yale University School of Art.
His collages and sculptures deconstruct the human body and seemingly call into question the notion of the “erotic gaze.” His body of work explores themes such as race, gender, and how a man of color is portrayed in pornography. The subjects are consistently distorted, yet retain a pleasant balance.
