The grid per se is of absolutely no importance to any of the artists in this exhibition, providing, as it does, merely an armature for a variety of styles, means and contents. The work here ranges in time from the ‘40s to the ‘70s, in space from here to Europe (and back again, in the case of Kelly), in “style” from “pure” to “expressionist,” and so forth. Every similarity points to a dissimilarity. The lines that can be drawn on different levels from one work to another to another to another form their own network of inter-relationships
