The Highway

The Highways, 1970, installation view, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.
About

The highway has rammed itself through our lives and we shall never be the same again. The new technology insinuates so deeply and broadly into our culture that no aspect of it is left untouched. When our freeway network becomes as technologically obsolete as the walls of the medieval city, remnants of streamlined toasters, split-level ranchers and A&P supermarkets will testify to its pervasiveness as a cultural artifact and as a symbol of way of life. Artists, by engulfing the highway and its paraphernalia into our cultural tradition, help us through their translation to see ourselves as we really are. An exhibition on the highway, in documenting this artistic assimilation, forms part of the cycle of our acculturation to our own objects.
