In addition to its questionable celebration of the hypermasculine, Garage Renovation New York repels the viewer physically as well as morally, featuring as it does tape barriers blocking entry to the garage. With wafer-thin slats in place of two-by-four studs, however, the piece’s rickety construction also expresses vulnerability and doubt. Rhoades’s mixture of macho standoffishness and fragility feels like teenage angst—American style.
