
Courtney Willis Blair interviews Rodney McMillian for Forbes Arts’ “4 Questions” column:
“The Black Show at the ICA Philadelphia centers around performance-based videos. The characters are engaged in different activities from delivering a sermon to telling a child’s story to traversing through southern landscapes and New York. They navigate the terrains of the home and public spheres — different landscapes that suggest and in many cases expose economic and racial inequities within those domains. The work in that exhibition was influenced by such writers as Samuel R. Delany, Octavia Bultler and James McBride amongst others. Their work re-inforced an understanding (one that I sometimes need reminding of) that reality can be a state mind and that an idea of transformation can be made material.”
