The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage announced this week its 2014 grants in support of Philadelphia’s arts and cultural community. ICA is proud to be one of the selected grantees awarded a Project Grant for $360,000 for the first major monographic survey of the work of artist Barbara Kasten titled Barbara Kasten: Stages.

Barbara Kasten: Stages (February 4–August 16, 2015) will be the first major survey of an artist—an established figure within the world of photography since the 1970s—whose work is currently being seen to frame some of the most urgent questions for contemporary art and abstraction in a digital age. The exhibition will reveal the way Kasten stages subject matter for the camera; highlight the theatricality of her work; and present examples from the many stages of her career. Underscoring Kasten’s prescient engagement with abstraction and postmodernism, Stages will help audiences understand the roots of much work being made by artists today—and indeed much of the pervasive look of our current culture.
