Art UnPhiltered is a media platform produced by members of the ICA Student Board. Through this series, students engage with local Philly-based artists and art professionals & produce an annual publication dedicated to showcasing the work of young creatives.
The ICA Student Board proudly presents “Roots Reimagined,” a publication featuring selected works from the Philadelphia student community. Like roots, the works are firmly anchored in ICA’s Spring 2024 exhibitions “Dominique White & Alberta Whittle: Sargasso Sea” and “Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe,” while also sprawling outward to explore broader themes of community, land, displacement, colonialism, and afrofuturism through the diverse perspectives of Philadelphia’s student voices.
Destiny Hall-Harper’s “Open Letter to Space and Space X” examines the mythologies of new frontiers with the line: “Would my hair carry the stars like yours and hold the galaxies within its coils?” while Hanako Purapa’s piece “Migration. Loss,” delves into the Kavalan tribe’s history of displacement through interactive theater.
Edited by Evan Zheng (C‘26) and Ivanna Dudych (C‘26), “Roots Reimagined” represents the emerging voices tasked with exploring questions surrounding our pasts and collective futures.
